Dear Parents,
Welcome to my page. we are working on our first trimester for first grade. Please make sure your child's attendance is good.  Your child will use the Math Facts in a Flash software in the computer lab and in our classroom. Learning and mastering math facts in addition and subtraction is a California Standard. Please practice math facts with your child. Please check the weekly report on Math Facts that will go home every Friday or Monday to see which fact your child needs to study. Your child needs to get to level 19 or higher by the end of first grade. Last year, four of my students mastered all 44 levels in Math Facts. Those children who complete all 44 levels will receive a trophy at the end of the school year. There are 10 themes in our reading series. Each theme will take three weeks to complete and there will be a theme test every three week. We are currently on theme 1. Your child should read every night. First graders are taught to decode over 400 words during the school year. They will be taught 226 High Frequency Words. Practicing will ensure your child learns to read at an acceptable rate and keeps up with his or her classmates. All students who know all 226 High Frequency words will receive a certificate at the end of the year. Thefirst trimester test will cover High Frequency Words from themes 1,2, and 3. Second trimester will cover High Frequency Words from 4, 5, 6, and 7. Third trimester willcover High Frequency Words from themes 8, 9, and 10. Please study your words. Writing sentences is very important. Please practice writing sentences every night. It is important to assist your child to put his thoughts into writing. We will work on writing every day. Your child may have written assignments for homework include in the packets. Your child will be required to write a paragraph on a given topic without assistance by the end of the school year. Please give praise and encouragement when your child attempts a writing assignments. Writing should be fun and not something your child stresses over. Encourage your child to read what he or she has written and revise as needed. Your child should use descriptive words and have a logical sequence of events in his or her writing. Encourage your child to write longer sentences and begin each sentence with different words to make his or her writing interesting. Please check for capital letters at the beginning and punctuation marks at the end. Make sure your child does not mix capital and lower case letters. Homework comes home every day. It is due the next day. Mrs. Ogawa PS:Reminder:  Children who do not complete the entire packet and read will not be given credit for homework.  The reading log is part of your child's homework packet.
